Dulwich Subscription Concerts is a series of concerts held in Dulwich between September and May each year. It was set up almost 5 years ago by a group of friends who are musicians or have an enduring interest in music. Its aims are to provide a platform for young predominantly local musicians as they start their careers and to try to encourage some of the number of professional musicians in the area to perform locally. The concerts are held in the Old Library, Dulwich College (except when Stile Antico came to sing when we went to All Saints, Rosendale Road). We try to catch young performers as they come to the end of their full time education and have had great success in spotting talent early. Notably The Solstice Quartet, this year’s Tillett Trust Young Artists’ Platform winners, Stile Antico, 2008 Grammy nominee and Diapason d’or winners 2008, The Rautio Trio, past Tillett Trust Young Artists’ Platform winners, The Alea Quartet and Simon Hewitt Jones and Friends have all given concerts for DSC. Of the more established musicians The Dante Quartet, Neil McLaren, Chi-Chi Nwanoku and Jane Beament, Sarah Leonard with Stephen Gutman and Sue Anderson spring to mind. And of course there is David Campbell, one of our foremost clarinetists and leader of the Hundwandler Octet which starts our series every September. We have listed the programmes for all the concerts over the last four years to show the range of music and performers we have heard. We aim to put on concerts of consistently high standard at not too high a price. The cost of a subscription ticket is £50 for 5 concerts or £15 for a single ticket, £40 for a concessionary subscription concert or £10 for a single ticket and £5 for a student ticket. Once you have come to one concert your next one is at the subscription rate. The ticket price also covers the cost of the programme – each one with an individually designed cover - and wine after the concert. We even have champagne after the September concert and we don’t limit it to just one glass either. A committee runs the concerts and the members are:- Mary Able Susan Anderson Juliet Bucknall David Campbell Michael Faulkner Sabrina Faulkner Simon Lane Jacqueline Nichols Margot Riordan-Eva A note about programmes. We are very flexible about repertoire and this sometimes results in changes to advertised programmes, for instance the Hundwandlers are not playing Mozart octets as first planned, but are playing Poulenc, Janacek and Arnold. These are wonderful pieces for wind ensembles and great fun. We're still not sure what Die Forellen are singing but as soon as we do, we'll put it on the website. Dulwich Subscription Concerts |
